Join us along with The CAN’d Aid Foundation, Alabama Gulf Seafood and The Alabama Coastal Foundation to recycle oyster shells, cans, and compost at this year’s Cook-Off. Last year, we collected an estimated 5,000 pounds of oyster shells. All of the oyster shells collected will create new reefs in Alabama waters to foster future oyster growth.
In addition to food value, oysters provide many other positive environmental benefits including:
– improving water quality- they can filter between 2 and 5 gallons of water per hour;
– providing habitat-reefs provide habitat for fish, shrimp, crabs, birds and other animals); and,
– limiting erosion- oyster reefs are natural breakwaters that protect shorelines
Keep an eye out for Crush It Crusade recycling tents throughout the event site to toss your oyster shells and other recyclable products.
